I like to knit.

I decided that knitting was more important than commenting.

The sword has no "power".

It's just really enormously cool. It has no magical powers. It grants no special abilities. It cannot be mastered. Andúril is too cool for "powers".

(It gets this from Aragorn, who is also inherently cool. And also from having a cool Elvish name.)

The scary thing about Denethor's madness...

...is that he seems entirely reasonable. His reactions are perfectly logical and make perfect sense under the circumstances. That's what makes his madness so frightening. Until the absolute breaking point (fire time!) he seems quite sane.

Movie audiences are not too stupid to understand that. It is not necessary to prepare the audience by making his every word sound nuts.

Just say "no"...

...to schizophrenic Denethor. It's sad. Really. But no.

Oops, I stopped paying attention.

I always did find the creeping around en route to (and in) Mordor bits rather dull. Although the king did manage to get his crown. That's such a lovely scene in the book, albeit a trifle overdone (light effects, people?) in the movie.

Oh. My. Goodness.

It's the wave dream. They actually included the wave dream. But it's supposed to be Faramir's dream. He's the one Tolkien identified with. I'll have to check to see if it's the real thing.

Just say "no" to stupid drinking games.

Another scene they could have cut in order to make room for the Scouring of the Shire. (Oh, crap, another one. Please, make it stop. THEY COULD HAVE CUT DOWN FIVE OR TEN TREES IN THE SHIRE IN THIS TIME!)

I figure (although I don't know if Peter Jackson realizes this) that the only reasonable explanation for having Aragorn encouraging Gandalf (whose special power is encouraging people) is that it is a sort of reverse psychology. It's supposed to inspire Aragorn. Who doesn't need inspiring. But whatever.

Oh, big difference.

They moved the opening title. Oooooh.

Well, we all know Saruman is supposed to actually show up. Please, please, please no Wizard-kabob, please, pretty please...Oh, my gosh. Gandalf said one line. And I could have sworn Saruman could act in the last two. I can really see why they cut this scene. Tolkien's version was better. If he jumps off, I swear, I will do something drastic. "You're all going to die." I am so scared.

Preliminary conclusion regarding to Saruman: They should have kept this out and added the Scouring of the Shire.

Secondary conclusion: That was marginally better. At least it actually happened in the book. But not like that. I might have to do something drastic anyway. Arrr...

I got the extended edition DVD.

It's time for this year's running commentary.

Spoilers will be in spoiler tags. Highlight with your mouse to read them: Like this.

Gee, the Déagol-underwater bit looks just as fake on the TV as it did on the big screen. You'd think they could do better. They can manage Nazgûl and Manwë's eagles, but they can't handle a measly two-second underwater scene. There are supposed to be some expansions to this part...we must not have gotten that far yet.

I'm FREE!

Free to do dishes, that is. :P (Also I scraped my knuckles a couple of days ago on the way to do laundry, so it's going to HURT.)

This is me.

The flames represent my exegesis paper. Sure, they look cool, but actually they are spiraling out of control.

I've been wanting to say that since last night, but I couldn't get online.

No, I can't tell you what exegesis is. Trying to explain what exegesis is (and how it is somehow different from "analysis" hurts my brain, which is already pretty frazzled at this point, so I'm not going to risk it.

As soon as I finish this exegesis paper (and also the Gospel of John paper that is incidentally also due today), life is full of possibilities. Like doing dishes and cleaning and packing. Okay, the possibilities come later. But I have to finish the paper first. *sigh*

If you are going to be in Ohio over Christmas, so am I. Starting tomorrow and going through January 3. Then I will go to South Dakota and be back the 14th, after which I will be in Ohio again until the 23rd. If you are not going to Ohio over Christmas, then you want to visit me in South Carolina. Particularly in late March, when it will be cold and dreary and damp up north and it will be spring here. You can say you are visiting the seminary. (You don't even have to be Lutheran to say this.) You know you want to do this. Afterwards, you can go to the zoo (which Salli likes).

My hands hurt.

I wish I could type my exams. It would take so much less time, and it would hurt my hand less, too.

Hebrew yesterday. Pastoral care this morning. New Testament in twenty minutes. History tomorrow morning. Two papers due next Tuesday. (Two BIG papers.)

I need a nap.
